Making Waves In Education
at Our Sisters' School

 July 1, 2016

Celebrating Achievement

The Festival of Arts and Student Achievement is an expansion of our traditional Art Show. Student artists became instructors sharing methods and strategies for mediums from pastel (below) to stained glass. The two day interactive event showcased student works of art, music and drama, with an original student production of "Oh, the Places You'll Go!"

We set lofty goals and celebrate them together.
Our 6th graduation ceremony was held before a standing-room-only crowd at the Whaling Museum. We celebrated the hard work and completion of study by the Class of 2016 (below). Families, volunteers, alumnae and friends applauded awards and words of wisdom.
Follow your dreams, girls!

Graduates Give Back

"I feel that it's right to give back to the place that directed me on the right path," said Rabiet Dasher '11 (above center), recipient of the Endeavor Scholarship at UMass Dartmouth. She is a graduate of Voc-Tech, a member of the National Honor Society, and completed her first year of college successfully.

Expressing gratitude like this seems to create its own positive energy. For example, after a full day of classes at Bishop Stang, sophomore Maya Tavares '14 (above left) enthusiastically coaches the OSS chorus with Jarynette Gonzalez '11 (above right). Jary graduated from Lincoln School in 2015 and currently serves OSS as an intern. "I'm glad I can give back to the place that started it all. I wouldn't be going to Berklee College of Music if not for OSS."

Academic coaching from Rabiet motivates 6th graders Alejandra Mendez, left and Isadora Sylvia-Ribeiro, center.

Math teacher Victoria Wood, left, an Endeavor Scholar from UMass Dartmouth, also began as a volunteer at OSS.

Our mission, as an independent, tuition-free, nonsectarian middle school, is to educate and inspire economically disadvantaged girls from the New Bedford area. Our Sisters' School empowers girls to step into the future with valuable life skills and a mindset of achievement and excellence by providing a safe, supportive, and academically challenging environment.

Dr. Jane Goodall's Message:
Make a difference in our world

When Dr. Jane Goodall came to speak at UMass Dartmouth on April 7th, our entire school was there. We prepared for weeks and when the time came, OSS presented powerfully. Above, two of our 6th graders, Keeilah and Amelia, tell Dr. Goodall about their eco-art.

We participated in the eco-parade, carrying artistic statements of support for the environment, we set up an entire gallery of eco-oriented art which included work from all OSS students, and we had a table where we showcased some of our most impressive science fair projects. Nariah (OSS '19, below) explored how food impacts growth of tiny sea life known as daphnia.

Taking Dr. Goodall's message to heart, students have established a chapter of Roots & Shoots to continue actively supporting our green goals. Our good work continues, so stay tuned.

Making Waves In Education
at Our Sisters' School

Time for Inspiration

March included many inspiring moments. Students from Voc-Tech gave an interactive presentation about nontraditional careers (Victoria with firefighter Jolene Menard, above). Morning speakers in careers from media to medicine shared their stories. And closer to home, the Class of 2012 returned to tell where they applied to college.

Alumnae happily take a selfie (above) as OSS celebrates their approaching graduation from secondary schools at the Senior Honor Dinner.

8th graders watch presentations at the alumnae event, where students inspire one another.
